Bissell Carpet Cleaner Won't Spray Water? 8 Fixes to Try

Fix 1: Fill and reseat both tanks

On upright models with a separate formula tank, Bissell notes that both the formula tank and the clean water tank must contain liquid or the machine will not spray. Fill both, then press each tank firmly into place until it clicks. A tank that sits even slightly crooked will not open its valve.

Fix 2: Test the tank cap valve

The clean water tank releases water through a spring valve in its cap, usually marked with an X in a red rubber gasket.

Fill the tank with water and hold it upside down over a sink.
Press the X-shaped valve with your finger.
If water flows, the tank is fine. If nothing comes out, soak the cap in warm water for about 30 minutes and test again.
If the red gasket is missing or the valve still will not release water, the cap needs replacing.

Fix 3: Rinse the solution filter

Many uprights (including ProHeat 2X models) have a small white solution filter under a red cap where the tank sits. Remove the tank, unscrew the red cap with a coin or flat screwdriver, rinse the filter under cool water, and refit it. Hair and dried formula here can block flow completely.

Fix 4: Clear the spray tips

Dried formula and hard-water minerals block the small spray holes on the foot. Gently push a straightened paper clip into each hole and brush the area with a soft brush. If your water is hard, rinse the spray tips with warm water after each use to slow down mineral buildup.

Fix 5: Check the brush / pump belt (uprights)

On several Bissell uprights, such as ProHeat and PowerSteamer models, the brush roll and the spray pump run on the same belt. If the brush is not turning, the pump is not turning either. Fix 6: Check the hose and tool

If the foot sprays but the hand tool does not, detach the tool and press the spray trigger with only the hose attached. If water comes out, clear the tool’s spray tip with a paper clip. If it does not, check that the hose is fully clicked into its port and not kinked.

Fix 7: Prime the pump to push out air

Air gets trapped in the line after a tank runs dry or after refilling. With the tanks full and the machine on, squeeze and release the spray trigger repeatedly for a minute or two.
