Humidifier White Dust: What Causes It and How to Stop It

Quick answer

Humidifier white dust is dried minerals from tap water, mostly calcium and magnesium. Ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers turn the water, minerals included, into a fine mist; when it evaporates, the minerals settle as white powder. The fix is to use distilled water, add a demineralization cartridge, or switch to an evaporative or steam humidifier, and to clean the unit every three days.

A layer of fine white powder on dark furniture, the TV screen or the floor around the humidifier is one of the most common humidifier complaints. It looks like dust, but it isn’t coming from your home. Here is what it is, whether it is harmful, and how to get rid of it.

What causes humidifier white dust?

Tap water, especially in hard-water areas, contains dissolved minerals. Ultrasonic humidifiers use a vibrating plate and impeller models use a spinning disc to break water into tiny droplets. Everything in the water goes airborne with them. The EPA notes that these types are very efficient at dispersing the minerals in tap water into the air, and that many people notice a white dust on surfaces (EPA: Use and Care of Home Humidifiers).

Evaporative humidifiers and steam vaporizers work differently: water evaporates from a wick or boils off, and the minerals stay behind in the unit. They produce little or no white dust.

Is humidifier white dust harmful?

For most healthy people, the occasional white film is a cleaning nuisance rather than a health threat. Still, the mist creates very fine airborne particles, and the EPA recommends low-mineral water as a matter of prudence, especially for people with asthma or other lung conditions and in rooms where infants sleep. If your air quality monitor shows a jump in particle readings whenever the humidifier is on, minerals are the likely cause (see how to read an air quality monitor).

The bigger concern is scale: mineral crust inside the tank, which the EPA says can become a breeding ground for microorganisms.

Four ways to stop humidifier white dust: distilled water, demineralization cartridge, evaporative humidifier and regular cleaning

How to stop humidifier white dust

1. Use distilled water

This is the most effective fix. Distillation removes more minerals than any other method, according to the EPA. Reverse osmosis and deionized water also work but usually leave a bit more mineral content. A gallon of distilled water lasts a small humidifier one to two days.

2. Add a demineralization cartridge

Many ultrasonic models accept a small cartridge that sits in the tank and captures minerals before they reach the mist. They work well in moderately hard water and need replacing when they stop working, often every month or two.

3. Switch to an evaporative or steam humidifier

If you live in a hard-water area and don’t want to buy distilled water, an evaporative unit traps minerals in its wick. Replace the wick when it turns hard or discolored. Steam units also leave minerals behind, but they use more electricity and the hot water is a burn risk around children.

4. Clean the humidifier every three days

Scale on the tank and transducer makes white dust worse and harbors bacteria. The EPA recommends cleaning portable humidifiers every third day and emptying and drying the tank daily. Our step-by-step guide on how to clean a humidifier covers the vinegar method.

5. Don’t over-humidify

Running the unit harder than needed sends more minerals into the air. Keep indoor humidity between 30% and 50% using the built-in humidistat or a separate hygrometer; see the ideal indoor humidity level.

How to clean up the dust

  • Wipe surfaces with a damp microfiber cloth; dry dusting just spreads it.
  • For streaks on glass, TV screens or dark wood, use a little diluted white vinegar on the cloth, then wipe dry. Test on finished wood first.
  • Vacuum floors and rugs with a HEPA vacuum.
  • Move the humidifier at least a few feet away from electronics and furniture, ideally on a waterproof tray.

Will an air purifier remove white dust?

A HEPA air purifier will catch some of the airborne mineral particles, but running it beside a humidifier using tap water just loads the filter faster. Fixing the water is the better solution. Frequently asked questions

Is humidifier white dust mold?

No. It is mineral residue. Mold looks like fuzzy or slimy spots, usually black, green or pink, and grows inside a dirty tank, not as an even powder on furniture.

Does boiled water stop white dust?

No. Boiling kills germs but leaves the minerals in the water. Only distillation, reverse osmosis or deionization removes them.

Does filtered pitcher water work?

Standard pitcher filters reduce chlorine and some metals, but they remove only part of the calcium and magnesium. You will usually still see some dust.

Why does my evaporative humidifier still leave white dust?

The wick may be saturated with minerals. Replace it, and clean the base to remove scale.
